Space travel is a thing of science fiction when it comes to civilians, right? Not so according to these companies. They’re not only ready to propel you into space, they’re going to be vying for your attention as well as your dollars to take a trip that you may have never expected to take in your lifetime.
SpaceX
One of the more higher-profile companies on our list is Elon Musks’s SpaceX. It’s high in profile because Mr. Musk garners much media attention with every move he makes whether it’s a car he’s producing as Tesla or even solar roof tiles. SpaceX has been operating cargo missions for NASA and others. They are also working on improving technology that will allow for crewed crafts to launch into space, which will lead them to civilian passengers.
Virgin Galactic
Another of the high-profile brands, Virgin Galactic – under the Virgin umbrella – is as progressive a company as you would expect from the likes of Sir Richard Branson. They’ve had a series of setbacks over the past ten years including one fatal accident, but these setbacks have been a boon to the company’s drive to successfully launch civilians into space. If there’s a brand that could find success in this arena, it’s likely to be Virgin Galactic.
Orion Span
Orion Span is banking on civilian space travel. So much so that they want to create the Aurora Station which they describe as “the World’s First Luxury Space Hotel in orbit 200 miles above the Earth’s surface. Our luxurious accommodations will include private suites for two, the most number of windows ever created for spaceflight, weightlessness, and the world’s only authentic astronaut experience. We launch in 2021.” Make your reservation now.
Axiom Space
While Axiom Space has always been focused on manufacturing and orbit research, they have lofty plans to launch the world’s first commercial space station. In their words: “The Axiom Space Station is home base for professional astronauts and private explorers. It is the microgravity laboratory where educators, scientists and researchers conduct life-improving research.”
Roscosmos
Russian company State Space Corporation Roscosmos is one that is great about partnering with other companies and brands. They are looking to further their mission of putting civilians into space and staying at a luxury space hotel. They’ve worked with KosmoKurs tasking them to build a reusable rocket for transporting tourists. They’ve also worked with SpaceAdventures to put tourists on the international space station. Yes, they even have lofty plans of their own with their own hotel.
Blue Origin
Working to develop “technologies to enable human access to space at dramatically lower cost and increased reliability”, Blue Origin names their endeavors after astronauts. Their New Shepard is a reusable rocket that “made history with the first ever vertical landing from space. Soon it will launch you into history too, as a pioneer in the next era of human spaceflight.” And, the New Glenn: “Our dramatic next step will take us closer to the potential that space holds for us all. Discover the future of reusable spaceflight technology.”
In addition to these brands that are working to put you into space, we’re likely to see many brands emerging with peripheral services and more to capitalize on civilian space travel.
