Uluru

Uluru Australian Destinations

You may not have known its name but you will instantly recognize this sandstone monolith located in the Outback. This is one of the top Australian destinations and needs to be added to your list when visiting this amazing country.

Rising dramatically from the Central Australian desert, the huge red rock of Uluru is one of Australia’s most iconic attractions. It stands 348 metres high and has a circumference of 9.4 km. Uluru is at its most stunning around sunrise and sunset, when the golden light makes the rock’s colours come alive. For the Anangu people, Uluru is inseparable from Tjukurpa, or traditional law. The actions of the creation ancestors are still visible around the rock, and their stories are passed on from generation to generation, just as they have been for thousands of years. –Parks Australia

Lake Hillier

For a truly unique experience, a trip to see the famed Lake Hillier is a must when visiting Australia. This small lake sits on Middle Island off the coast of Western Australia just next to the Pacific Ocean. It glows a bright bubblegum pink, delighting its visitors. It is no wonder this is one of the most beautiful places in Australia.

The reason of its unique colour is still a topic that is not fully understood by scientists. Most suspect it has to do with the presence of the Dunaliella salina microalgae. The Dunaliella produces carotenoids, a pigment found in carrots as well. But the presence of halophilic bacteria in the salt crusts could be another explanation. A reaction between the salt and the sodium bicarbonate that is found in the water may cause it as well. –Hillier Lake

Horizontal Falls

The Horizontal Falls are a major attraction of the Kimberley region of the Outback.

The tidal waterfalls located deep within Talbot Bay in the Buccaneer Archipelago are unlike any other waterfall, the water passes horizontally. Although they are called waterfalls, this natural phenomenon actually consists of intense tidal currents hurtling through two narrow coastal gorges. Massive tidal movements create a waterfall effect as water banks up against one side of the narrow cliff passage, to be repeated again on the turning tide. –Kimberley Australia
