Anyone can have an Instagram account, but cultivating a fan-worthy Instagram feed is an art. As part of that art, you must know where to shoot the best photos that will garner all the likes and comments they deserve. A visit to South America is no exception and we’ve tracked down the most Instagram-worthy places to shoot on your trip.
Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia
Covering more than 10,000 square kilometers (more than 3,800 square miles), Salar de Uyuni is not what you’d expect to encounter on a visit to South America. At best, it is a surreal venture and you’ll likely agree as you’re traversing the world’s largest salt flat. You’ll quite possibly encounter flamingos and llamas in this most interesting of landscapes that includes wide expanses of white desert, colorful lagoons, and smoky volcanoes.
Easter Island, Chile
Quite possibly one of the more magical and mystical destinations on our list, getting to Easter Island isn’t the most convenient, but the photo opportunities will make you happy you made the effort. More than 1,800 miles off of the coast of Chile in the South Pacific Ocean has enabled Easter Island’s treasures – volcanic rock sculptures that are more than 1,200 years old – to remain intact. Its seclusion has another benefit: not everyone will make the trek to get the photo.
Machu Picchu, Peru
Of course, we have to the obvious and one of the most sought-after and well-known destinations in Peru if not in all of South America. Machu Picchu is a beloved wonder of architecture that was erected in the 1400s and allows us to understand the Incan empire as it represents them and their civilization. While the trail there may wear you out if you’re not conditioned for the hike, once you reach it, your most difficult dilemma will be which Machu Picchu photo to post to Instagram. Huacachina, Peru
After the hike to Machu Pichu, heading to what appears to be barren desert may not seem like the most obvious choices for a stop. However, Huacachina, Peru is a relatively new oasis around a gorgeous blue-green lagoon. That development includes a wide range of restaurants and, better yet, resorts. Check-in and recuperate from your big hike and when you’re ready, try sandboarding in the desert sands that surround Huacachina. You’ll need a shot from up above the area anyhow – as well as a shot of you on the sandboard.
Los Glaciares National Park, Argentina
When thinking about South America, most of us usually think of beaches and rainforests, but glaciers? Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina will not only change your mind about that perception but also give you a reason to pack some warmer clothes. As Argentina’s largest national park, Los Glaciares also holds the distinction of being home to the largest ice cap outside both Greenland and Antarctica. You may be unhappy that Instagram doesn’t have a panoramic feature (yet).
Valparaiso, Chile
Valparaiso’s namesake in Indiana isn’t really an accurate reflection of the original in Chile. The Valparaiso in Chile is well-known for its colorful appearance that can’t help but to put a smile on your face and brighten up your Instagram feed. With the street art in this city, you’ll be in a veritable wonderland of Instagram-worthy shot opportunities.
