Spring weddings are absolutely lovely but the thing that makes them even better is a honeymoon. April is an ideal time to take a honeymoon nearly anywhere but our favorites include Spain and Italy and, closer to home, Hawaii and Canada (yes, Canada!).
Barcelona, Spain
Your destination in Spain is in the Catalonian region. A visit to Barcelona is always an adventure in beauty. From the many Gaudí museums to the shopping and the wine and the tapas, Barcelona always delivers. But what makes a visit to Barcelona in April special? It’s the Sant Jordi Festival. Considered to be Catalunya’s Valentine’s Day, it is the “Rose and Book” Festival of St. George.
While exploring Barcelona, you’ll need a home base and we suggest the romantic Hotel Neri Relais & Chateaux. Chic and exclusive and located in the heart of the old Jewish quarter, Hotel Neri Relais & Chateaux notes that it is “set in two historical and aristocratic houses, being one of them a medieval palace from the XII century. The building’s original period charm has been preserved and enhanced by the hotel’s sophisticated interior design. Its design blends with relaxing music and sensual aromas to create a unique setting in this ancient area of central Barcelona.” Complete with a gastronomical adventure at the in-house restaurant, Hotel Neri Relais & Chateaux is perfect for an April honeymoon.
Avellino, Italy
Most, if not all, of Italy is romantic but Avellino promises the romance of a fairytale. The region is full of fairytale castles dating back to the Middle Ages. You can spend your days exploring the castles of the area including Lancellotti Castle, Morra Castle, Castelo di San Barbato, Castello di Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi, or many others.
To fully enjoy the fairytale romance of the area you’ll need a romantic hotel in which to settle. The Hotel de la Ville bills itself as comfortable and luxurious and you’ll agree when you spend time in one of their suites. You’ll enjoy both The Cavallino Helium restaurant as well as the Helium Lounge and, if you must, their Area TechnoGym will help keep you in shape so you can enjoy more of the pastas and wines of Italy. The hotel describes one of their most striking features (the facade) best, noting “translucent glass cleverly arranged create the shape of a mountain and give the original design the facade of the Hotel De La Ville in Avellino almost paying homage to the beauty of the surrounding mountains of the green Irpinia.”
Kauai, Hawaii
The beauty of Hawaii is not only almost indescribable, but it’s basically in our backyard. We could open a debate about the most romantic destination in Hawaii but a visit to Hawaii is always about what you’d like to do while you’re there. We feel that one of the most romantic islands in Hawaii is Kauai. It offers everything from the high end to the opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural wonder that is the Hawaiian Islands. There are winding roads to explore, trails to hike, and lush green areas to enjoy.
You’ll need to visit Waimea Canyon as you explore, but we also suggest that you take your new spouse on a biplane tour of the island. Seeing the grandeur of Kauai from a bird’s eye view can be a life-changing experience and whether you book the tour at the beginning of your honeymoon to see the island and pinpoint what you’d like to explore or end the trip with the tour to see an overview of where you’ve been, an air tour is an outing you won’t regret. But one of the reasons we love Kauai is because of The St. Regis Princeville Resort. It’s everything you’d expect from the St. Regis brand, but more. From their gorgeous rooms and suites to the dining and golf and the decadent spa services, the St. Regis embraces the aloha spirit beautifully.
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada
While Niagra Falls, New York has long been a honeymoon destination for couples in the eastern United States, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario is just across the border and across the Niagra River and is situated on the gorgeous Lake Ontario. Niagara-on-the-Lake has become well-known for its wineries and flower-filled, treelined streets. Those flowers will be blooming during your April honeymoon as you explore the old town features of this quaint village filled with 19th-century buildings.
The romantic Prince of Wales Hotel features elegant rooms and suites in an historic Victorian hotel. They have on-site fine dining as well as an indoor pool and spa.
