The Cannes Film Festival is arguably the most glamorous festival in the film industry. Industry insiders flock to the French Riviera for a star-studded festival celebrating the best in film for the year. Because there is so much to see and do, it can be difficult to prioritize what activities you can manage within a weekend trip. We have chosen the five things you must do if you just have 72 hours in Cannes.
Watch Movies
Each year twenty new films are a part of the festival’s Official Selection. These films compete for the coveted Palme d’Or award and are shown at the Theatre Lumière. Entrance to these premieres is by invitation only and all attendees must dress in Black Tie wear.
For those who are not able to snag a ticket to one of the festival’s official premieres, the Cinéma de la Plage is open to the public. Attend an Industry Party
Entrance to one of the many film industry parties held during the festival is only slightly easier to come by than seeing one of the twenty Official Selections. While there will inevitably be countless private parties in hotels and bars or on the yachts that dot the harbor, there are a few other larger galas as well. This year the 25th annual amfAR Gala Cannes will be held at the gorgeous Hôtel du Cap.
To date, this spectacular, star-studded event has raised more than $210 million for amfAR’s life-saving research programs and has helped keep the fight against AIDS in the global media spotlight.
Enjoy French Cuisine

While there are numerous Michelin star restaurants in Cannes, only Palme d’Or can boast two Michelin stars. The restaurant offers some of the best cuisine in the French Riviera with a breathtaking view of the bay of Cannes. The restaurant resides in the Hotel Martinez, so tables will be hard to come by. Best to plan well ahead!
Take in the Scenery
When the focus is on the film festival it could forgotten that Cannes is a stunning city on the French Riviera. Take a bit of time to walk La Croisette, the mile-long promenade that follows the shoreline. From La Croisette you can gaze over the Mediterranean waters, take in the French architecture, or browse some of the city’s luxury stores.
Spot Celebs
When you are strolling La Croisette or dining in one of Cannes’ restaurants, you just might catch a glimpse of some of the many celebrities who attend the festival. Grabbing a drink at the Martinez or the Intercontinental Carlton may increase your chance of a celeb sighting. If you are bound and determined to see the famous actors in real life, stake out a place near the red carpet before one of the major premieres. Just be aware that you will be sharing the area with hundreds of other tourists hoping to catch a glimpse.
