What’s the best souvenir possible on any given trip? Priceless, frame-worthy memories in the form of stunning photographs! In a world awash in selfie sticks and GoPro’s, it can often be a struggle to get the perfect vacation photos that are worthy of being up on a wall and not just posted on Instagram. How many times have you asked a stranger to take your “once in a lifetime trip” photo, at that iconic site, only to sheepishly ask them to take it again because it’s was out of focus, too dark, or you just look so bad even FaceTune can’t save you? How many times was your very trip existence in question because you’re never in the frame and always behind the lens? Consider hiring a professional photographer in almost any destination of your choosing to be your personal paparazzi while you explore the sites!
Many resorts have a photog on staff. Here I am with my daughter Kaya (@topteentraveler), racing through the meadow at The Ranch at Rock Creek. I never could have gotten this photo with a selfie stick! They were so accommodating as I was dying to reenact this same photo that I saw in their brochure. I have personally used a professional photographer during my travels several times. How else would you catch candid moments like the one below at a Masai Tribal village ceremony in Tanzania?
Any hotel concierge can help you find a good local photographer, but now there’s a great new website called Flytographer.com where you can access professional photographers in almost 200 cities around the world! The founder, Nicole Smith, says “her company carefully vets photogs to make sure they’re decent, enjoyable people as well as top-notch talents.” Because the photographers are local, they also know all the best non-touristy spots to shoot that a non-local would never know to go.
Our photog in Cambodia knew all the lesser trampled nooks, crannies and angles to get private, peaceful pics without the crowds. This is the Ta Prom, an Ankorian Buddhist Temple, that is also known as the Lara Croft Temple.
One of the best things you’re ensuring with a pro? Their patience in order to get just the right shot! Can you imagine, for the photo above, handing your expensive camera to a stranger and hoping against hope that they would still be there with your camera by the time you climbed back down from the rock caves? Uh, No! (“Fairy Chimneys” of Cappadocia, Turkey – Argos Cave Hotel @argosCappadocia)
It was really important to me to have my big birthday trip with family and friends memorialized in a fun, relaxing way! I wanted to be able to be truly present and enjoy every moment without dragging around camera gear and worrying about getting good shots. Trusting that a wonderful talent would do that for me was worth its weight in gold! (Nizuc Resort, Cancun -Adrian Hernandez photographer)
And sometimes….. you get an opportunity to do a magical photo shoot in an unbelievable place! I planned well in advance to do this shoot with Dean Sanderson of Playa Del Carmen in one of the sacred, freshwater Cenote caves for my birthday. It’s called a “Trash The Dress” shoot- aptly named, but oh sooo worth the sacrifice! And it was a blast to boot!!
Hiring a photographer is perfect for traveling couples, honeymooners, newlyweds, families or big occasion trips full of moments worth capturing beautifully. A pro can get those shots worth framing and capture those vacation memories that will last a lifetime. Your memories are priceless and some trips just deserve more than a selfie!
